    • Peer to peer networks - 2 or more computers acting both as server (sharing resources) and client (using resources).  Relatively easy to set up and inexpensive.  No additional computer or software packages are required.  Recommended when security is not a problem. Easy to administer.  Share files and printers. Most small offices and home offices only need a peer to peer network or a wireless setup.

        • Ex: Windows XP,  Windows NT/2000 Professional   

        • Ethernet cables  - Category 5

        • Network Interface cards (NIC) 10/100 mbps.

        • Hub or Switch

    • Client/Server - Also known as server based networks.  Computers usually optimized for network use with faster, more powerful processors, more memory, disks space, etc. Security is centrally controlled from a server which authenticates all user accounts and passwords.  Another advantage is the growth potential.  Server based networks can grow from a few users to a thousand users as the company grows in size.

      • System Requirements

        • Dedicated computer as server

        • Network operating system software such as Windows NT and Windows 2000/2003

        • All of the above system requirements as a peer to peer network.

    • Wireless Networking

      • No cables to install and holes to drill on the wall.

      • Freedom of mobility with your laptop

      • Easier to add computers to network
